ORGANITEXTURE: Recent Paintings & Mixed Media @ Align Gallery, July/August 2017
SHOW RUNS THROUGH AUGUST 10th, 2017
These pictures are all story pictures. They demand stories, but are never satisfied with the ones you give them. Like life, art is about mistakes, is about the messy business of differentiation and reunification, a thing ceaselessly making and unmaking itself. I've tried to grow an aesthetic as one might cultivate a a petroleum eating bacteria-by sinking lots of ships. The ship of myself. The ship of my ideas about the history of art. The ship of a small business, a counter culture, a network of communities, the ship of perfect loves I never let be good enough. I like to be unnerved by the process and the results of the process. To feel my withdrawing, to feel the thing pulling away from me, becoming it's own thing, maybe even it's own self (who can say that a piece of art is not a living being?).
It's a strange thing, birthing pictures. I can feel in my heart that the strangeness is good; that the lie of truth and pain and love and death and life itself is telling the truth of beauty and the stories are flowing from the picture like blood from the sacrifice and it's time to make the next picture. In the process, in the work, there is the excruciating intimacy of being alive, the exquisite lattice of moments that links our souls with our bodies, our feelings and thoughts with each other, with the net of being, with time itself . The texture of this envelope is what I hope this work conveys--the feeling of living, the feeling of life itself, beautiful and heartbreaking in it's continual unfolding, the hope that lives there, the joy, the gratitude, the excruciating, exquisite intimacy of being alive.
Blessings.
